PSB are thrilled to welcome artistic director, international coach, producer and guest teacher, Dawn Weller in 2020!

Dawn joined The State Theatre Ballet at an early age and moved rapidly through the ranks to principal dancer status by the age of 19. Dawn has been the subject of a book (Dawn Weller: Portrait of a ballerina). Her contribution to dance was acknowledged by South Africa when she was awarded the Order of Meritorious Service Silver (O.M.S.S.) and having the Dawn Weller floribunda rose named after her. Dawn is cited in the Oxford Dictionary of Dance as a “musical and dramatic dancer” and, amongst other achievements, for her appointment as artistic director.

Appointed Artistic Director of the State Theatre Ballet a position she held for 17 years, Dawn acquired for the company works by many of the world’s leading choreographers.

Her lavish full-length production of La Bayadere was taken into the repertoire of three major companies including Hong Kong Ballet.

Dawn was the founding Director of the contemporary State Theatre Dance Company, The State Theatre Ballet School and a founder trustee of resident Nelson Mandela’s Arts & Culture Trust.

On moving to Australia, Dawn was appointed Director of The Graduate College of Dance in Perth Western Australia, a position she held from 2002 until retiring in 2019.

Dawn has served on the jury of many international competitions including the VIII Moscow International Ballet Competition chaired by Yuri Gregorovich and headed by the legendary Galina Ulanova. Dawn has been a panellist for the South African International Ballet Competition in Cape Town; the World Ballet Competition in Sibiu Romania, the VIBE Competition in Vienna and the Lucie Saranova Competition in Australia.

She is regularly invited as a guest teacher at national and international summer schools.

In 2019 Dawn was invited to coach principals and assist with the staging of Joburg Ballet’s production of Giselle featuring international guest artist Anais Chalendard.

Dawn is a Life Member and Registered Teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance, and is an Honorary Member of the Cecchetti Societies of Southern Africa and Australia.
