Character dance is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theatre and are used by many modern day ballet companies.
The Perth School of Ballet offers classes in character dance using the International Character Dance Syllabus created by Alida Segal.
A good example of character dance within ballet is the series of national dances which take place at the beginning of Act III of Swan Lake. The ballets Don Quixote and Paquita both also feature many character variations based on traditional Spanish dances.
Our Character dance classes are offered to students in ballet Grades 4 to 6.
Each year, The Perth School of Ballet offers exams. These exams are not compulsory but are usually recommended for students demonstrating a certain level of aptitude in their classes.
Exam dates will be available during Term 2. Information regarding exams will also be available at that time.
Exams are held late in Term 3. Students with strong technique in Character dance will be invited to participate in these exams by their teacher.
